Sports Chiropractic

Chiropractic treatment can help to reduce the effects of structural asymmetry and improve the functional motion of an athlete.

Chiropractors are one of the few doctors specifically trained to look at the structure of the human frame. They are also trained in the proper motion or function of the human body, called biomechanics. This advanced training in bio-mechanics allows chiropractors to efficiently detect structural and functional abnormalities before they become major problems such as injuries or poor performance.

Chiropractic treatment of children is not the same as it is for adults. It is gentle and is a very low-force technique. Many children actually enjoy it because they feel better afterward and the gentle massage that goes along with the adjustment helps as well.

There are several reasons children need chiropractic care. The most important one is, that they are still developing skeletally, muscularly, neurologically, developmentally, etc. Regular chiropractic treatments help to fix structural asymmetries BEFORE they become problems.

Nutritional Counseling

A chiropractor can help people everywhere achieve the holistic nutrition their bodies need to be healthy. People can take all the vitamins, minerals and supplements they want, but until they experience the benefits that a licensed chiropractor can provide, they will be missing the final link that can help them in achieving holistic nutrition.

Chiropractic involves treating the person as a whole by assisting the body to heal naturally. It has long been known that healthy, nutritious diets coupled with rest, exercise and spinal adjustments are an integral part of preventative health care. Both Dr. Amy and Dr. Beth provide nutritional counseling. Dr Amy also offers Nutritional Response Testing, a precise and scientific clinical muscle testing procedure use to evaluate health needs. Muscle response testing, first developed in the 1960's has been used by a wide range of medical and health professionals. It is a unique approach to health assessment and quite different from conventional medical procedures.

Detoxes and Purifications

Purification is merely the internal cleansing and detoxification of your body. Think of it as "spring cleaning" for your insides.

Why do I need purification?

Purification, also known as detoxification, can help you remove natural toxins from your body and help maintain a healthy weight. We are exposed to external toxins every day, including pollutants, pesticides, and chemicals. Internally our bodies produce waste byproducts as a result of normal metabolic function. Although your body is designed to rid itself of these toxins naturally, it can become overburdened. Purification offers your body additional support to expel natural toxins and minimize your weight, which is important to maintaining your health and vitality.

Toxins can contribute to a wide range of conditions:

  • Stuffy head
  • Fatigue or difficulty sleeping
  • Digestion and other gastrointestinal problems
  • Food cravings and weight gain
  • Reduced mental clarity
  • Low libido

Dr. Amy Thomas Alves D.C

Founder and Owner

Amy completed her doctoral degree in chiropractic at New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) in Seneca Falls, NY on July 24, 2006. Since October 2006, she has been practicing as a chiropractor in Easton, PA, and established Advanced Health Chiropractic in April 2009.

Her practice emphasizes wellness and disease prevention through a healthy and balanced lifestyle. During her externship at NYCC, Dr. Amy received guidance from an esteemed professor who was an expert in biochemistry and nutrition. This experience, combined with several post-graduate education hours, has led Dr. Amy to become devoted to patient wellness through nutrition and health advice.

As a lifelong participant in various sports events and an avid sports fan, Dr. Amy has a natural passion for assisting athletes in achieving their maximum potential. She accomplishes this by adjusting areas other than the spine, such as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, and foot. This approach leads to decreased recovery time and improved athletic performance, which is also beneficial to the general population.

Dr. Julia Romich D.C

Dr Julie is a Lehigh Valley native who graduated from Notre Dame High School. Later, she earned a Bachelor's in Health Sciences from the University of Rhode Island. She is passionate about nature and enjoys spending her free time hiking, traveling, and immersing herself in her surroundings.

Dr. Julie’s first encounter with chiropractic care occurred during high school when she suffered a herniated disc from a sports-related injury. Despite seeking multiple opinions, the only viable treatment was through the intervention of a chiropractor. This experience sparked her interest in chiropractic care, leading her to pursue a Doctorate in Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Florida campus.

As a Webster technique practitioner, she is an active member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Her focus is on enhancing spinal health from infancy to adulthood. She specializes in chiropractic care for infants and children, as well as chiropractic care for prenatal patients. With her vast knowledge and experience, her primary objective is to enhance the holistic health of her youngest patients and their families, irrespective of their age.

FAQs

In case you had concerns, here are some frequently asked questions and answers to clear things up.

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a form of alternative healthcare focused on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, primarily through manual manipulation and adjustments of the spine and other joints in the body. Chiropractors, who are trained healthcare professionals, believe that these adjustments can alleviate pain, improve function, and promote the body's natural ability to heal itself without the need for surgery or medication.

What conditions can chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors are primarily trained to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders. While they often focus on conditions related to the spine, they can also address a range of other health issues. Common conditions that chiropractors may treat or help manage include:

  • Back Pain: Chiropractors are well-known for treating various forms of back pain, including lower back pain, upper back pain, and sciatica.

  • Neck Pain: Chiropractic adjustments can be effective in reducing neck pain and improving neck mobility.

  • Headaches: Chiropractic care is often used to address tension headaches and certain types of migraines.

  • Joint Pain: Chiropractors can provide relief for joint pain in various parts of the body, including the shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles.

  • Muscle Strains and Sprains: Chiropractic care may help alleviate pain and promote healing in cases of muscle strains and sprains.

  • Sports Injuries: Chiropractors can assist in the rehabilitation of sports-related injuries, aiding in pain relief and recovery.

  • Whiplash: Chiropractors often treat individuals who have suffered whiplash injuries in car accidents or other traumatic events.

  • Arthritis: Chiropractic care may help manage pain and stiffness associated with various forms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Disc Herniation and Bulges: Chiropractors can provide care for disc-related issues, such as herniated or bulging discs.

  • Posture Problems: Chiropractors often address posture-related issues, which can contribute to chronic pain and musculoskeletal problems.

  • Nerve Pain: Conditions like sciatica, which involve nerve compression, can be treated by chiropractors.

  • Pregnancy-Related Discomfort: Chiropractors may assist pregnant women in managing musculoskeletal pain and discomfort during pregnancy.

  • Childhood Health Issues: Chiropractic care is sometimes used to address various pediatric issues, including colic, ear infections, and certain musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Chiropractic care may help manage symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

  • Digestive Issues: Some chiropractors focus on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, suggesting that adjustments may influence digestion and other bodily functions.

  • Stress and Anxiety: Chiropractic care may contribute to stress reduction and overall well-being.

It's important to note that while chiropractors can provide relief for these conditions, they are not a replacement for medical care in certain situations. Chiropractors often work in conjunction with medical doctors and specialists, referring patients when necessary. If you have a specific health concern, consult with a qualified chiropractor to determine whether chiropractic care is an appropriate treatment option.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Chiropractic care is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified and licensed chiropractor.

How does a chiropractic adjustment work?

A chiropractic adjustment, also known as spinal manipulation, is a manual procedure performed by a chiropractor to correct misalignments or subluxations in the spine and other joints in the body. The goal of a chiropractic adjustment is to restore proper alignment, reduce pain, improve function, and promote the body's natural ability to heal itself. Here's how a chiropractic adjustment typically works:

1. **Patient Assessment:** Before performing an adjustment, the chiropractor will assess the patient's medical history, including information about their symptoms and any previous chiropractic or medical care. The chiropractor may also conduct physical examinations, which can include palpation, range of motion tests, and orthopedic and neurological evaluations. These assessments help the chiropractor identify areas of misalignment or dysfunction.

2. **Identification of Subluxations:** Subluxations refer to misalignments or abnormal movements of the vertebrae in the spine or other joints. The chiropractor identifies subluxations through the assessment and may also use X-rays or other imaging techniques in some cases.

3. **Patient Positioning:** The patient is typically asked to lie down on a treatment table or sit in a specific position. The chiropractor will instruct the patient to relax and may use specialized adjusting tables to assist in the procedure.

4. **Adjustment Technique:** Chiropractors use various adjustment techniques to correct subluxations. These techniques may include:

- High-Velocity, Low-Amplitude (HVLA) Thrusts: This is the most common technique, where the chiropractor applies a quick and controlled force to the specific joint that needs adjustment. The audible "cracking" or "popping" sound that often occurs during an adjustment is due to the release of gas (nitrogen) within the joint.

- Drop Table Technique: The chiropractor uses a special table with sections that drop slightly when pressure is applied to the spine. This allows for a gentler adjustment.

- Instrument-Assisted Adjustments: Chiropractors may use handheld instruments to deliver precise adjustments without manual thrusting.

- Manual Mobilization: This involves a slower, more gentle manipulation of the joint, suitable for certain conditions or patient preferences.

5. **Post-Adjustment Evaluation:** After the adjustment, the chiropractor may reevaluate the patient's range of motion, posture, and any immediate relief of symptoms to determine the effectiveness of the adjustment.

6. **Post-Adjustment Care:** Chiropractors often recommend rest, hydration, and avoiding strenuous activity immediately after an adjustment. Some patients may experience mild soreness or discomfort, which is usually temporary.

The exact experience of a chiropractic adjustment can vary depending on the chiropractor's techniques and the patient's condition. While many patients report feeling immediate relief or improved mobility following an adjustment, it may take multiple sessions to achieve the desired results, depending on the nature and severity of the issue being addressed.

It's important to note that chiropractors receive extensive training in performing adjustments safely and effectively. Patients should consult a qualified chiropractor for a proper assessment and to discuss the suitability of chiropractic care for their specific condition.

Are chiropractors licensed and trained?

Yes, chiropractors are licensed healthcare professionals who undergo comprehensive training to provide chiropractic care.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of chiropractic sessions you will need depends on various factors, including the nature and severity of your condition, your overall health, and your treatment goals. Chiropractors typically create individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient's specific needs.

Do chiropractic treatments hurt?

Chiropractic treatments, including spinal adjustments, should not typically be painful. In fact, many patients find these treatments to be quite comfortable and even relieving. However, individual experiences can vary, and some people may feel mild discomfort or soreness following an adjustment.
